The best China eSIM depends on your trip length, data needs and whether you require access to international apps like Google or WhatsApp. From the plans we have documented: Airalo offers unlimited data with a fair-use policy and verified USD pricing, while Nomad describes international routing for app access. How much data do you actually need in China?

Your data needs depend on how you use your phone. Navigation, messaging and light browsing typically use under 1 GB per day. Video calls, photo uploads and social media can push usage above 2 GB per day. Tethering a laptop increases consumption further.

Airalo’s unlimited plans have a fair-use default of 3 GB per day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. This is a policy term, not a measured speed. For most travelers doing navigation and messaging, 3 GB per day is sufficient. For heavy video use or laptop tethering, confirm whether a package-specific exception applies.

International app access: the question that changes the decision

If you need Google Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp or other international apps during your China trip, this becomes the deciding factor. Nomad documents that its China eSIM uses international routing to allow access to these apps without a separate VPN. We have not tested this claim.

Airalo does not document an equivalent app-access statement for its China plans. This does not prove apps will or will not work; it means the question is unanswered in their official documentation.

If international app access is essential to your trip, ask the specific provider about your specific apps before purchasing. Do not rely on a country label or a general assumption.

Check your device before comparing plans

Apple advises checking carrier lock status before using another carrier’s service. On iPhone, check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. An unlocked phone shows No SIM Restrictions. Android eSIM support varies by manufacturer and model; use your manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Confirm your exact model supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  • Check that the provider supports your device for the specific China plan.
  • Decide whether to keep your home line active alongside the travel line.
  • Save installation instructions offline before departure.

What we have not verified

This comparison is based on official documentation, not firsthand testing. The following remain unknown or unverified:

  • Actual network speeds, coverage quality or app-access behavior in any Chinese city.
  • Nomad USD pricing: the source displayed CHF, not USD.
  • Whether Nomad plans assign a phone number or support incoming SMS.
  • Airalo package-specific fair-use exceptions beyond the general 3 GB/day default.
  • Real-world activation timing and reliability for either provider.
  • Any plan’s behavior on local Wi-Fi networks, which is separate from eSIM data.

How we chose these examples

Airalo and Nomad are included because their official China product documentation was available for review. This is not an exhaustive market survey. We have documented four plan examples from two providers. Other providers exist but have not been researched to the same standard. A commercial link does not establish suitability for your trip. Read the official documentation and resolve any unknown before purchasing.
