China eSIM: choose around your trip, not a ranking.
Start with the jobs your connection must do: maps and messaging, laptop tethering, or receiving a verification text. A travel data plan is not proof of a Chinese phone number, and an eSIM label does not guarantee access to every app. The examples below show documented plan details alongside the questions still unanswered. Match the validity to your itinerary, confirm your exact phone model, and resolve any essential unknown with the provider before committing.
Four plan examples to compare
Compare trip length and allowance type before totals. These examples cover mainland China and are not equivalent bundles or a full market survey. Prices below are verified USD snapshots, not live quotes or checkout totals.
| Provider / plan | Data allowance | Validity | Listed total (USD) | Source / checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AiraloChina unlimited · 3 days | Unlimited (fair-use policy) | 3 days | $11.50 USDChecked 2026-10-21 | Source details ↓Checked Documentation reviewed |
| AiraloChina unlimited · 7 days | Unlimited (fair-use policy) | 7 days | $27.00 USDChecked 2026-10-21 | Source details ↓Checked Documentation reviewed |
| NomadChina fixed data · 1 GB | 1 GB | 7 days | Not verified in USD | Source details ↓Checked Documentation reviewed |
| NomadChina fixed data · 3 GB | 3 GB | 30 days | Not verified in USD | Source details ↓Checked Documentation reviewed |
Nomad USD totals remain unverified. A price in another currency has not been converted or presented as a comparable USD quote. No cheapest-provider claim is made.
Check the conditions behind the allowance
A blank answer can change your decision. “Not verified” is unknown, not a yes or no. The source references lead to the official documentation list below, where each external source is linked once.
Airalo's general unlimited policy is a default, not a confirmed package-specific exception or a speed test. Recheck the individual package and its validity trigger before use. These tables do not establish Chinese +86 numbers, OTP delivery, real-world speeds or app availability.
Which option fits your trip?
| Your priority | What to compare | Before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| Short visit | Validity window and activation trigger | Count arrival and departure days; do not assume installation starts service. |
| Heavy data use | Daily high-speed limits and slowdown policy | An unlimited label alone does not answer these questions. |
| Laptop or second device | Tethering permission and any separate allowance | Confirm the policy for the individual plan and your device. |
| Chinese number or SMS | Assigned number, country code and incoming SMS | Resolve this first; more data does not solve a number requirement. |
| Mainland plus other stops | Each territory explicitly listed | Do not assume a mainland China plan includes Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan. |
International apps: ask about the connection
Nomad documents international routing and app access for its China eSIM. We have not tested that statement. Ask about your essential apps and exact plan; keep important travel details offline.

A data plan is not a local number
The Airalo example is listed as data-only. Nomad’s page leaves the selected plan’s number and SMS capabilities unresolved. Do not treat either a country name or an app-based call as confirmation of a Chinese +86 number or verification-code support.

Before departure: compatibility and activation
- Check the exact model and purchase region with the manufacturer, then confirm support with the provider.
- For iPhone, check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock; Apple uses “No SIM Restrictions” to indicate an unlocked phone.
- Read the individual plan’s installation and validity instructions; save them for offline use.
- Decide which line will carry data and confirm any home-line roaming charges with your existing carrier.

Compare total cost on the same assumptions
Write down the full trip length, required data, currency and any tethering need before comparing totals. Include extensions or extra data you may need. Compare the same trip duration and allowance type. The table shows only verified USD snapshots, not live quotes or a cheapest-provider ranking. Nomad USD pricing remains unverified; no exchange-rate conversion is inferred.
If you arrive without a connection
- Confirm the plan covers your location and is within its validity window.
- Check that the installed travel line is on and selected for mobile data.
- Follow the provider’s roaming, network-selection and APN instructions for that plan.
- Record the error and contact provider support. Do not delete an eSIM until support confirms how it can be reinstalled.
How we compare
These are four documented plan examples from two providers, not a complete market survey or an endorsement. We compare the same fields and leave unsupported details unknown. We have not purchased these plans or tested coverage, speeds, apps or verification texts. Read the sources and resolve any unknown that matters to your trip.
Common questions
Which provider is best for everyone?
This comparison does not establish a universal winner. Start with the requirement that would make a plan unusable for you, then compare the remaining options.
Can I receive a Chinese verification code?
Not established by these examples. Ask for confirmation of the assigned number, incoming SMS and acceptance by the service sending the code.
Does unlimited mean unlimited high-speed data?
No. Airalo’s general unlimited policy defaults to 3 GB per 24 hours, followed by 1 Mbps until reset. A package can specify a different threshold; check its details. These are policy terms, not measured speeds.
Can I share data with a laptop?
Both cited providers document hotspot permission. Airalo’s unlimited fair-use policy still applies; confirm your exact package and device restrictions.
Does an eSIM replace a VPN?
They serve different roles. Read the routing guide before relying on a particular app, and distinguish mobile data from local Wi-Fi.
