When should you install and activate your travel eSIM?
Install before departure only after confirming when the package starts counting time. Installation adds a profile; billable service and validity follow the package rules. A destination-connection trigger may allow early installation, while an installation-based trigger can use up days before you fly. Save the instructions and arrange a working internet connection for setup.
Read the validity trigger first
| If the package says validity starts at... | What to do |
|---|---|
| Installation | Schedule installation for the intended start; check how days are counted. |
| First supported network connection | Confirm coverage includes any departure or transit country before enabling it early. |
| Manual activation | Locate the exact button or procedure and activation deadline. |
| Purchase | Include the time between purchase and travel in your calculations. |
Documented rules can differ
Holafly describes its Europe service starting at the destination when the eSIM is turned on. Nomad warns that some China eSIMs require manual activation. These examples are not a universal activation rule. The order instructions for your selected package are the deciding reference.

Before flying: add the travel profile
- Check the exact phone and carrier-lock status first.
- Read the validity trigger and activate-by deadline; keep the order reference and support details offline.
- Use reliable Wi-Fi or a hotspot. Follow the provider QR, app or manual setup method.
- On iPhone, use Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add eSIM and follow the supplied method. Add a new travel line rather than transferring your home number.
- Label the profiles Home and Travel. Keep the travel line off until the package instructions say to enable it.

After landing: choose the intended data line
- Follow the package activation instructions and enable the travel profile when appropriate.
- Select Travel for mobile data. Set roaming on that line only as required by the provider.
- Check the home line settings and charges separately; switching data alone does not settle voice or SMS costs.
- Test a small page, check the provider allowance/expiry screen and save the support contact.
If setup stays on activating
Check internet connectivity, software and whether the travel line is already listed. Apple suggests toggling airplane mode or the line, restarting and checking carrier settings. If it still fails, give support the exact error and device details through its private support channel. Do not repeatedly delete and rescan the profile without confirming the reinstall policy.

Common questions
Can I activate without Wi-Fi?
Plan for Wi-Fi or a hotspot. Apple documents exceptions for some eSIM-only models in certain regions; do not rely on that exception for your phone or package.
Can I prepare a Japan eSIM before Narita?
Read its validity rule and install before flying if permitted. A destination-based activation can reduce arrival setup work; save the steps offline either way.

Page describes service starting at the destination when the eSIM is turned on. The selector displayed EUR while the explicit price table displayed USD; these figures use only that USD table.
