Travel decisions

Can you use a travel eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes, when the exact plan and device support tethering. An unlimited phone-data allowance can still have a separate sharing limit. For the Europe examples reviewed, Holafly lists 1 GB of sharing per day; Airalo's general unlimited policy permits personal hotspot use subject to fair-use rules. Confirm package exceptions before planning laptop work or sharing with another traveler.

Connect a laptop to an iPhone travel line

  1. First confirm that the phone itself loads a small page over the travel cellular data line.
  2. Open Settings > Personal Hotspot and enable Allow Others to Join.
  3. Use the displayed network name and password on the laptop; stay on the hotspot screen until connected.
  4. If a supported device has compatibility trouble, try Maximize Compatibility.
  5. Pause laptop updates and cloud synchronization, then check the data counter after your first session.

Can two travelers share one connection?

A hotspot lets another device use the connection while it stays within range; it does not install the same eSIM on two phones. Sharing can suit companions who stay together. If you split up, the second traveler needs another connection. Compare the shared allowance and the need for independent maps and messaging before choosing one plan for everyone.

If the laptop connects but has no internet

  1. Check whether mobile data works directly on the phone. If not, resolve the travel line, remaining data, expiry and package roaming/APN instructions first.
  2. Confirm tethering is enabled by the provider and the sharing allowance is not exhausted.
  3. Reconnect using the displayed password; restart both devices and check supported software updates.
  4. Ask support before resetting network settings. Apple notes that reset removes saved Wi-Fi, cellular, VPN and APN settings.

For video meetings and large uploads

Budget laptop use separately and ask what happens after the daily sharing or high-speed threshold. A policy permitting tethering is not a guarantee of video-call quality. Keep an alternative connection for time-critical work. We have not measured hotspot speeds or tested these plans on a laptop.

Sources & verification

Primary-source documentation, checked against the claims described below. Provider statements are not independent tests.

  1. Source: Holafly - Europe plan and USD price table
    Checked · Documentation reviewed

Unlimited: 7 days USD 27.50; 15 days USD 51.50 in the USD table. Europe hotspot allowance: 1 GB per day. Fair-use slowdowns can apply. Page describes service starting at the destination when the eSIM is turned on. The selector displayed EUR while the explicit price table displayed USD; these figures use only that USD table. Exact network names, individual-country inclusion and numeric high-speed threshold remain unverified. Not a connectivity test.

  2. Source: Airalo — Unlimited Data Plans fair-use policy
    Checked · Documentation reviewed

Personal hotspot permitted. Default 3 GB per 24 hours; then 1 Mbps until reset. General unlimited policy; packages can specify a different threshold. Provider terms, not a measured speed.

Hotspot requires carrier and plan support. Allow Others to Join and Maximize Compatibility can help supported devices connect. Network reset also removes saved network settings; it is not a first step in these guides.
