How much eSIM data do you need for your trip?
Use your own daily mobile-data history, multiply by travel days and add a reserve. A 5 GB allowance over 10 days gives 0.5 GB a day before any reserve; 10 GB over 14 days gives about 0.71 GB a day. These are budget limits, not predictions. Video, photo backup and laptop sharing can change the requirement quickly.
Calculate a total, then round up
Illustrative total = assumed daily GB x travel days x 1.2. The 20% reserve is an editorial planning choice, not a measured requirement. These scenarios exclude extra hotspot use unless you include it in the daily assumption. GB here means 1,000 MB; providers and device counters can differ.
| Assumed daily usage | 7 days | 14 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 GB | 2.1 GB | 4.2 GB | 9 GB |
| 0.5 GB | 4.2 GB | 8.4 GB | 18 GB |
| 1 GB | 8.4 GB | 16.8 GB | 36 GB |
Measure your likely daily use
- Record the mobile-data counter before a representative day. Include maps, messaging and social apps as you expect to use them while traveling.
- Record the counter after the day and subtract the starting value. Repeat on a heavier day.
- Add any laptop usage, cloud backup or extra video you normally do over Wi-Fi.
- Apply the formula to the full trip and round up to an available allowance. Check validity independently.
Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram have no single usage rate
Offline maps, image downloads, video quality, autoplay and call length all change data use. A text-only messaging day is not comparable to an hour of video calls. This guide has no measured Google Maps or social-app rate to publish. Download maps on Wi-Fi, restrict automatic backups and use the actual app counters on your device. If maps consume M MB per hour for your route, H hours per day use M x H MB; add the measured app totals before converting to GB.
Is 5 GB or 10 GB enough?
| Package and trip | Daily budget before reserve | With 20% reserve |
|---|---|---|
| 5 GB / 10 days | 500 MB | 416 MB |
| 10 GB / 14 days | 714 MB | 595 MB |
| 5 GB / 7 days | 714 MB | 595 MB |

Supported iPhones allow separate lines for calls and data. iPhone 13 models and later support two active eSIMs, subject to regional hardware support. Stored profiles are different from active lines; one cellular data network is used at a time. Verify exact regional model.
